Terrorism: Why It’s a Threat

The Twin Towers go down, the world is shocked, so are we. A car bomb explodes, dozens killed, over a hundred injured. A shock wave tears off in all directions from the roadside bomb, a Humvee explodes; the damage isn’t too bad though, the troops are used to this by now. Why, we ask, why would anyone be willing to kill themselves just for the sake of killing others? How do you get into this mentality. We don’t understand it, can’t understand it. Somewhere in the Middle East, a second bomb goes off.

I am not going to call terrorism the gravest threat to America, I believe that spot is reserved for Russia, but this is not just something to be laughed at, these are not just “little countries” as Barack Obama has said. This form of terrorism is so dangerous because of the people who participate. Their very heart and mind believe this to the last fiber of their being, a product of Saturday morning Iranian Television, with cute Mickey Mouse-like characters explaining how America is evil. And not just too much T.V., too much deep reading into the Qur’an; too much listening to radical imams; too much exposure to the ultimate submergence into a very real branch of Islam; something I can only call Radical Islam.

Radical Islam is a very real part of Islam, a belief that when the Qur’an says “Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”Q 9:5 (The poor due is a fee, paid by those living under Muslim law that do not worship Allah, to Islam, these people live as second class citizens in these countries) it means it. The Qur’an holds other verses like this, and the point of them is that all people must live under Muslim law either believing in Islam, or as a Dhimmi (person who pays a special due, lives as second class citizen). These people believe that a nation must first be given the option of converting, if they refuse, the nation must be subjugated; by any means necessary. “Say to the Unbelievers, if (now) they desist (from Unbelief), their past would be forgiven them; but if they persist, the punishment of those before them is already (a matter of warning for them). And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do” (8:38,39)

The believers in this are not just homeless, uneducated, believers; but also intelligent, well-educated, strong believers in Islam, who are among the minority of Muslims who really read the Qur’an. They come to believe in this whole-heartedly. Believing that 70 virgins will await them upon their entrance into heaven if they become a Martyr. Believing that all infidels must be subjugated. These are the people we fight, men and women so convicted to their beliefs that they will go to all extremes to fulfill what they believe they are called to do. You have to admire them. And fear them maybe a little bit more.

“I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them”(Sura 8 verse 12).
