A True Hero: Mosab Hassan Yousef

Yousef was born the son of a very influential Hamas leader. He lived out his childhood as a devout, faithful Muslim working for Hamas as anyone would expect. His family was educated to an extent that few people in the Middle East ever receive an opportunity for. But while held in an Israeli prison that Hamas had infiltrated, watching Hamas torture people they believed were cooperating with the Israeli’s and reading the Bible he found in his cell, he began to look at Islam in a different way.

Several years later, Yousef entered the U.S. under a visitors application to avoid being killed for his new Christian faith. His family begged him not to go to the media with his story, but he believes it is his duty to tell the truth he has discovered. Now, Yousef speaks plainly about Hamas and the religion he left behind.

“The problem is not Hamas, the problem is not people. The root of the problem is Islam itself as an idea, as an idea.”

Yousef stated plainly in his interview that Islam is wrong saying: “Islam is not the word of God. If you want to be offended it’s your problem. But you know something? Go study. Think for a second that I might be right. So wake up, look at your path, see where you’re going. Are you really going to heaven with 72 virgins after you kill yourself and kill another 20 people?”

But Yousef doesn’t believe that Muslim’s are evil, he says that they are children of God, who loves them. And he doesn’t just side with the Israelis in this conflict, when asked if the Israelis were blameless in this conflict, he said:

“Occupation is bad. I can’t say Israel — I’m not against any nation. We can’t say Israelis, we can’t say Palestinians, we’re talking about ideas. Israel has the right to defend itself, nobody can (argue) against this. But sometimes they use (too much) aggression against civilians. Sometimes many civilians were killed because those soldiers weren’t responsible enough, how they treat people at the checkpoints. My message even to the Israeli soldiers: at least treat people in a good way at the checkpoints. You don’t have to look really bad and it’s not about nations, it’s about just wrong ideas on both sides and the only way for two nations really to get out of the endless circle is to know the principles that Jesus brought to this earth: grace, love, forgiveness. Without this, they will never be able to move on, or break this endless circle.”

Yousef doesn’t believe that peace between Israel and the Muslim world will be happenning overnight: “Nobody has magic power to do something for the Middle East. No one.”

So why is Yousef a hero? Because of his willingness to risk his life for his beliefs. For his willingness to risk his life to stand against the terrorists. Because threats to his life are real. Muhammad stated clearly “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.” Mosab Hassan Yousef is now wearing a target, but he believes that when he dies, he will have eternal life. As he says: “They got to kill my ideas first, (and) that’s it, they’re already out. So how are they going to kill my idea? How are they going to kill the opinions that I have? … They can kill my body, but they can’t kill my soul.”

One last quote before we are finished.

“JONATHAN HUNT: Do you believe that Israel can ever strike a peace deal with Hamas?

MOSAB HASSAN YOUSEF: There is no chance. Is there any chance for fire to co-exist with the water? There is no chance.”
